Garlic and olive oil…

This is going to be difficult to write because on another tab I have Marty Robbins playing. When I listen to music, I LISTEN to music, it’s never background for me, so I’m sitting here singing along and jigging in my chair.

This afternoon I made fish filets and brussel sprouts for lunch. I mentioned to my husband that I could easily be a vegetarian, I do like my veggies. He said as long as he got meat sometimes that was okay with him. He said I should make two meals – one for him and one for me. I scoffed at that – me, who hates to cook even one meal, making two different meals. Meh.

We then went through a list of the veggies he does eat and the list is pretty extensive for a man who rarely ate vegetables before he met me. His brother says he will anything as long as it isn’t green! That’s my husband’s culinary background – meat, potatoes and occasionally spinach.

Before he meet me the only vegetable my husband ate was spinach, preferably in cream sauce. Now, oddly enough, spinach is one of the vegetables I don’t care for particularly. I like it well enough raw as a salad (then again I like almost anything as a salad.) but cooked, not so much. Now the man eats, and really likes, eggplant, zucchini, asparagus, brussel sprouts; the man actually likes broccoli rabe, so not one of my favorites. As I’m writing this I’m realizing he likes veggies that tend toward toward the bitter. Interesting.

On the other hand, I love broccoli any which you make it – preferably fried. Now when I say fried I do not mean deep fried, I don’t deep fry anything. “Fried” means cooked in a slick of olive oil in a frying pan. Of course broccoli is the ONE vegetable he really hates. Of course he never had broccoli with garlic and olive oil and that’s how I pretty much prepare all veggies – hot or cold. I have it in my head to make broccoli with bacon – hmm.

(I’ve switched to Don Williams now…who doesn’t love Don Williams…)

Enough with the food talk – Thursday is grocery shopping day and I will be buying eggplant and zucchini, plus Friday is salad with ‘grilled chicken’ day – I shall be a happy camper through the coming week. Plus, I checked, Brick’s Pizza is open on Sunday – last Sunday was just a one-off because of the holiday. Yes!

On last Saturday’s post, in the comments, I said that I pride myself on my folding abilities…

so Monday, after I had done the laundry, which included a set of king size sheets, I decided to take a picture of my nicely folded sheets – flat sheet, fitted shot, pillow cases –

  1. You forgot to include your magic wand in the sheets picture.

    I’ve never had any desire to be vegetarian, because I don’t like vegetables. Not all vegetables, but a lot of them.

    1. 🪄 I guess it’s what you grow up eating? We ate lots of vegetables, every meal plus salad…always salad at the very least. Salad was sometimes just greens, all different kinds, mostly chicory, with just olive oil and vinegar drizzled over it.

  2. Don Williams, yes! I have long expressed the unfulfilled desire to be able to sing like Don. Oh, well. As to food, I think I’ve reached the stage in life where I eat to live. But then, a properly cooked T-bone or NY strip. . . (Stop it Grace, don’t gag. And in my defense I do it very seldom.)

I know what you mean about just eating because you have to *sigh* I’ve got nothin’ against T-Bone or NY Strip other than they are so inferior to a rib eye – I will heartily enjoy a good rib eye steak, actually it is the only kind of steak I will eat. Of course in NYC we always called them club steaks or delmonico – The last coupla rib eyes I bought, despite paying top dollar, were awful. Here’s some Don for ya – George’s and my favorite –


  3. That broccoli sounds yummy! I roast it in the oven with olive oil and even Lexi likes it. We got an eggplant once and must not have cooked it right because it was not good. We recently, as in about a month ago, discovered we like grilled asparagus. Once we found out, we bought it again but then haven’t been able to find it so it must not be in season anymore.

    You’re an expert sheet folder! Love that Don Williams song too!

    1. When you ‘fry’ the broccoli (after having steamed it a bit) it gets a crispness to it, it looks burned but I like the taste and texture, I think it probably tastes like roasted. You’ve never had eggplant parmigiana? or caponata? Well, I don’t expect most non-Italians to have had caponata, oh my dear eggplant is wonderful. Google some recipes and yes, just roasted in the oven. So many ways to make eggplant, next time you’re out and about try a Greek restaurant – they do eggplant really good! Asparagus has a very short growing season and yes, it is past. Trader Joe’s has nice frozen asparagus –


    1. Cauliflower I don’t like, along with lima beans – turnips, parsnips – nope. Fruit! OMG – fruit! Love fruit. I grew up eating lots of fruit – all of the usual plus fruits that were considered way back and even now, exotic – mango, papaya, star fruit and my beloved persimmons – OMG – fruit! I haven’t had a decent bit of fruit in decades. I would kill for fresh juicy peaches, nectarines, and PERSIMMONS. And avocado? Hell, I’ve been eating that since I was a baby and I was born in 1946. Again, maybe it’s the Italian thing – we like our fruits and veg – it ain’t all macaroni with us.


  4. I’m not familiar with Marty Robbins or Don Williams, but if they make you happy I like them too. I like spinach well enough, but steamed not in cream sauce. I’ll eat just about any vegetable except okra. Not a fan. Fortunately it’s easy to avoid.

    1. Okra! I forgot okra in my list of veggies I don’t like. Eww to okra. I can understand not knowing Marty Robbins but you’ve never come across Don Williams? Both crossed over from Country and I’m going to have to try to figure out why I like country music – it may go back to the late 50’s, early 60’s when Roy Orbison and Conway Twitty and even Patsy Cline crossed over to the pop charts – dun’t know, NYC was never a big country music town so where the heck was I getting country music from?

  5. I’ve never fried broccoli before. Now I want to try it.
    I got a laugh out of the picture of your sheets because last week when I was folding my laundry I did the sheets and thought I should take a picture of these and use them for a blog post.

    1. Stuff like neatly folded fitted sheets is always fun blog fodder. Today I am going to test out my husband’s promise to try broccoli “fried’ with bacon. I’m not too sure about the health factors involved, ie bacon fat and especially since I will be making hamburgers as well but I am intrigued with the he bacon element and who doesn’t love bacon.
